Auditions: Tips & Reminders

If you are interested in auditioning, please read the information on this page carefully and fully! If you are interested in only applying for a crew position, you do not need to continue reading—just sign up to join HSE Drama on StudentSquare and stay tuned for more information on the application process.

*Optional Dance Audition*

There is an optional dance audition that all are welcome to complete. More information including a video of the choreography, and instructions on submitting your self-tape will be posted later on StudentSquare.

We strongly encourage but do not require people to submit a dance audition. Why? Firstly, it helps us understand your current skill level as a dancer. Second, it allows you to demonstrate your ability to learn, rehearse, and perform a short sequence on your own. Thirdly, regardless of how well you dance, it shows your work ethic. All together, it helps directors figure out the best places for different performers.

If you doubt your skills, send a video anyway—you might not be as bad as you think.

Stay tuned for information on where to access Mrs. Pike's videos and how to submit your audition tape. If you want, come to the Pathways workshop on 12/9 to run through it with other people. (More information below)

Audition Process: Preparation & Materials

You must have sheet music for your audition song—NOT a rehearsal/karaoke track. It should be in the correct key for your voice and include the piano part. (See example below)  Sheet music that has only the vocal part (like a book from a show you've been in before) will not work.

Don’t own any sheet music? No worries!
EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO USE MR. M.’s AUDITION BOOKS.

Click HERE to access the audition files Mr. Mathias has made available, or drop by the Performing Arts Office (H105) to look through the binders there.

(*These are intended only for HSE students and should not be shared outside our school community.)

We will have copies of the binders in the room on audition day.

NOTE: You are definitely not limited to what you find in those resources; they are just here if you would like to use them.

If you don’t see anything you like in our binders and books, but don't have music, see if your friends do. Our local library in Fishers has some sheet music. Book stores (like Half Price Books, Barnes & Noble, etc.) carry some songbooks. Online sources like MusicNotes.com or SheetMusicPlus allow you to buy sheet music to print out. (but it is not free, so talk to your adult first!)

SONG SELECTION REMINDERS

- Your song should be in the style of the show for which you are auditioning. Do NOT sing a song from the show you are auditioning for.

- Pick something that shows off your vocal ability (e.g. range, expression, character, etc.) but pick something that you can perform safely and consistently.

- Pick a song you enjoy
singing; let your enthusiasm feed your confidence and make bold choices!

On the ACTUAL audition day...

- Dress comfortably but appropriately.

- Practice your introduction when you practice your song. It should go something like this:
"Hello my name is [YOUR NAME]. I am a [YOUR GRADE] and today I will be singing a selection from [YOUR SONG TITLE] from [TITLE OF THE SHOW IT IS FROM]."
Picture
**If you are using a selection from one of Mr. M.’s resources, you do not need to print a copy. we will already have those books there.**

If you are using your own music:

 - The actual pages of music should be **in a binder** or displayable in a way that makes it easy for the accompanist.
If it's in a book, make a copy of only the pages you need. You should be prepared to sing 16-32 measures of the song—usually a verse and a chorus.

- If you want to put your music in sheet protectors, that is fine but PLEASE make sure that they are not glossy.
(You’d be surprised how much glare those lights create!)

- Please clearly mark in the music where the selection starts and where it ends. (Big marks in pencil, pen, or highlighter!)

- Always be polite to your accompanist when explaining tempos, internal cuts, etc. They are there to help you demonstrate your strengths as a performer—let them help you.
